How we practice Yin Yoga
Yin Yoga works beyond the muscles and targets the fascia — the connective tissue that hydrates & supports the body and rejuvenates the nervous system.
By slowing down and finding stillness in the postures, Yin Yoga creates the conditions for:
Fascia to soften and rehydrate
The nervous system to shift out of stress response
Greater awareness of habitual tension patterns
This is why many students experience Yin Yoga as deeply restorative, even when the shapes themselves appear simple.
What to Expect in a YinWave Yin Class
A typical Yin Yoga class at YinWave includes:
A quiet arrival and settling period
A small number of Yin shapes held for longer durations
Clear guidance with optional variations and props
Time to pause, sense, and adjust
A closing period of rest or integration
No flexibility, strength, or prior yoga experience is required.
How Yin Yoga works
Yin Yoga at YinWave is not about achieving shapes or pushing limits.
It is an invitation to slow down, listen inwardly, and move with greater care and awareness — supporting the body and nervous system over time.
A Slower Way to Practice Yoga
In most forms of exercise, we focus on the effort. In Yin Yoga, the most interesting moment often comes after the effort has finished.
As we slowly release a posture, many practitioners notice a subtle "afterglow" moving through the tissues. A wave of sensation, warmth, tingling, ease or energy. Yin teachers often call this the rebound.
While science is still exploring exactly what is happening, many believe it reflects a combination of fascial hydration, nervous system response, circulation changes and the release of stored tension. Whatever the mechanism, experienced Yin practitioners know the feeling well.
The rebound teaches us something important: more is not always better.
If we force a Yin posture, chase the deepest stretch or ignore the body's signals, the rebound can feel overwhelming, sharp or uncomfortable.
But when we find the sweet spot — enough sensation to stimulate, not so much that we struggle — the rebound often feels nourishing. The body responds with a sense of spaciousness, ease and flow.
In this way, the rebound becomes a teacher. It tells us whether we have listened well.

Yin Yoga is a slow, quiet style of yoga that works gently and deliberately with the deeper layers of the body.
Rather than moving continuously or building heat, Yin Yoga uses longer-held, floor-based shapes to invite softening through the joints, connective tissue, and nervous system. Shapes are approached with care, supported by props, and adapted to suit individual bodies.
At YinWave, Yin Yoga is offered as a therapeutic practice, not a stretch class and not a workout.
How is Yin Yoga different at YinWave?
Our approach to Yin is based on the Paul Grilley school of Yin. A Fascia-Informed practice that is calm, intelligent, and deeply respectful of the body.
Classes focus on:
Slow, deliberate movement rather than flow.
Mindful positioning instead of forcing flexibility.
Generous use of the “rebound” to allow the body to heal & hydrate naturally.
Each posture has a target area to release
This approach supports people who feel overstimulated, tight, tired, or simply in need of a quieter way to practise.
All classes take place at our studio in South Croydon (CR2 9BX) and are suitable for beginners and those returning to yoga after a break.
